In recognition of Black History Month, the York Sunbury Historical Society virtual speaker series will feature two presentations on the important contributions of Black New Brunswickers to both the legal profession and military.
The remarkable life of Abraham Beverly Walker, the first Canadian-born Black lawyer, will be the focus of the first presentation featuring historian Peter Little.
This LIVE event is FREE and will be held via ZOOM at 7 pm on Thursday, February 18, 2021. The presentation will be recorded and made available online after the event.
Little is the author of Abraham Beverly Walker’s biography. His book follows Walker’s incredible life story from his beginnings in Kars, NB and his struggle for justice in the face of racism and discrimination. Due in large part to Little’s efforts, Walker was posthumously awarded the Order of New Brunswick in 2019.
The second event in the Black History month series tells the compelling stories of Fredericton’s Black soldiers serving in the Great War, 1914-1918. Featuring UNB PhD student Katelyn Steiva, the presentation will explore the real- life stories behind these soldiers, who they were, where, and in what capacity they served during the War. It will also address what role race played in shaping their wartime service and experiences.
This LIVE event is FREE and will be held via ZOOM at 7 pm on Thursday, February 25, 2021. The presentation will be recorded and made available online.
