Virginia Morrison, 7 years old (1987.24.2a)
Managing a large collection can be an overwhelming job. At the Fredericton Region Museum, we are fortunate to have had several amazing summer students and volunteers over the years. Our volunteer, Brian, has been working with our archival collection now for a few years and he has done an incredible job organizing it and unearthing many treasures.
A few weeks ago, he dropped by the office with a several items that need to be researched. I don’t have a lot of time to do the research, though I would dearly love a chance to work on it, so I told him that I would try to tackle a file a week and see if I can do to improve the provenance of the files. A file a week was an ambitious expectation, I think it’s going to be more like a file a month!
Item number two is a photograph of Virginia Morrison when she was seven years old. It is part of a series of photos of the Morrison family, the Morrison Shingle Mill and other buildings in Fredericton, donated by Z. Calabrese of New Milford, New Jersey, a photograph collector, in 1986. The photograph was taken in Kansas City, Missouri by local photographer, W. T. Dole.
The Morrison Shingle Mill at Fredericton
John A. Morrison owned a shingle mill below Fredericton near the foot of Forest Hill. John Morrison had purchased this mill in 1860 from Shives and Morrissey. The mill burned in 1860 and again in 1872, 1885, and for the last time in 1914.
